DBT is heavily based on CBT with one big exception: it emphasizes validation, or accepting uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and behaviors instead of struggling with them. DBT also involves learning new skills, like coping methods and mindfulness practices, so that you have the power to improve unhealthy thoughts and behaviors.
There are four main components of DBT: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance (how do we cope with distress in the moment without making things worse), Emotional Regulation (how do we regulate the ups and downs we feel), and Interpersonal Effectiveness (how do we successfully navigate our relationships with others).
